Zydus Cadila is a manufacturer of
a number of generic drugs and is located in India. Pankaj Patel who
is the Chief executive officer runs the company. Mr. Patel is the
son of the founder of the company. The late Shri Ramanbhai Patel who
was the co-founder of the company, and his family remains Zydus
Cadila’s major shareholders.
The company recently launched its version of the diet drug Acomplia
(Rimonabant) under the generic name Slimona into the market place.
Slimona is the antagonist for the CB1 Endocannabinoid receptor,
which has been found to be a major element in the treatment of
obesity. Zydus Cadila was the only company to bring Slimona to
Indian patients.
Zydus Cadila has gotten the drug Slimona approved to be used as a
treatment for obesity in persons who have other risk factors that
are associated with obesity including diabetes. The company produces
the drug Slimona in a tablet form with 20 mg potency. This is strong
enough for the average patient.
Dr. Ravindra Mittal, who holds the title ‘Medical Advisor and Head
Regulatory Affairs’, at Zydus Cadila points to the importance of the
drug Slimona when he comments that with the high levels of
occurrence of obesity across the world, there is a desire for new
drugs to help fight obesity. Dr. Mittal believes that Zydus Cadila’s
Slimona will satisfy the desires of many doctors, and other
specialists and health professionals, who were seeking a new
complimentary approach, to better control and manage obese patients
and also those who are overweight.
